2023 Christmas Trends

Every Christmas we’re encouraged to try something different with our Christmas decorations. One year everything is red and green, the next Christmas blue is the in colour. Minimalism gradually creeps into over-the-top maximalism. Sparkly is chic one year then seriously uncool the next. And so it goes on.

The one remaining constant is that we all want a beautiful Christmas tree as the centrepiece of the Christmas decorations.

But even Christmas tree buying evolves. At Slamseys we used only to sell Norway Spruce trees but now the needle retaining Nordmann Fir trees are by far our most popular trees and the spruce sit quietly at the back of the barn waiting for someone to discover their gorgeous smell and old-fashioned shape.

These are the trends we’ve noticed for 2023.

It’s all about the build -up

Forget the old-fashioned notion of bringing in the Christmas tree a few days before Christmas and leaving it up until Twelfth Night. Bill Wheaton, who has been selling Christmas trees for nearly fifty years commented “We used to sell most of our Christmas trees in the fortnight before Christmas, but now we sell more in November than the week before Christmas.”

In 2023, many people are putting up their tree at the start of Advent, if not earlier, but taking it out before the New Year.

The Two Tree Family

This year, we’ve noticed more people buying two or more trees. The main tree is beautifully decorated for a real wow factor when guests walk into the house while a smaller tree in the kitchen, living room or bedroom spreads the joy through the house.  The smaller tree is often given over to the children to decorate with a (relatively) free hand, keeping the main tree Insta-perfect.

Sharing the Love

Last year more people put their Christmas tree in front of the window and left the curtains open so that passers-by could enjoy it when the lights are switched on. It certainly brightens the street and looks warm and inviting on a cold, dark evening and is a trend that will get bigger each year.

Bay windows are the perfect site for sharing your beautifully decorated with your neighbours. Drape the lights from top to bottom, rather than winding round and round, for maximum effect. Fabric bows and paper stars are an inexpensive way to fill in gaps if you don’t have enough baubles.

Porchscaping

Porches are the perfect place for creativity now that we’ve moved on from a lonely holly wreath swinging on the front door.

In 2023, the wreath on the door is big and colourful while the porch is set like a stage with a small Christmas tree, in a pot or barrel stand, surrounded by lanterns and other props. Hanging stars, fresh and dried foliage, maybe a toboggan or sleigh can set the scene. You could also include a small “Thank You” basket of snacks and drinks for delivery drivers.
